Bears, wolves and wild half-beast children form the heart of Shane Krieg’s work. His use of fairytale aesthetics and figurative, almost comic style illustrations, transports the viewer into a realm of big bad wolves, goddesses, and mythical creatures.
Dipping his brush into his subconscious and drawing from a childhood lived almost entirely in the imagination, Shane calls up an endless stream of marching, grunting, howling, seething, staring sprites, beasties and beauties and lets them loose on the page.
Once sketched, these creatures take on individual traits, personalities and desires, which grow and evolve into the deeper aspects of the finished work. Be it a glint in the eye or a furrowed brow, each muse stands on its own, often leaving Shane wondering just how much control over them he has.
Having lived in England, Scotland, and Ireland, visiting the great galleries of Europe, Shane’s style has grown and changed over the years, but his underlying subject matter has ever gravitated around the fantastical, often mischievous.
Mixing the tone of the Brothers Grimm with the excited fun-loving attitude of his West Highland Terriers, Ruben and Audrey, Shane’s work is full of absurdities of both life and colour.
He has worked in a number of artistic endeavours over the years, as a mural artist in London, a graphic artist for magazines in Australia and the U.S.A., as a designer of t-shirts, logos, posters, cd covers, signs, comic books and fine art.
